We're starting the year with a kick on the theme of football! The novel we'll be reading and exploring in class will be 'Bend It Like Beckham' by Narinder Dharmi. Of course most people think of a film not a book and of course we'll be watching the film too.
So, now it's your turn to kick of your year with your views on football, girls playing it and the idea of sport and gender, whether certain sports are more male or more female. What do you think about this issue? Do some sports require personality types or characteristics that are generally more associated with one gender than another? Or is this idea 'red herring' that could be called 'sexist' and in fact it is the case that either gender could equally well display any of the diversity human characteristics that exist? Post your views on this now!

I think that there are some sports that are more for men (like Boxing)and others which are more for girls, like dancing.

But there are a lot of exceptions and whoever thinks there aren't, is sexist!

Football is a sport that has almost always been associated to men, because when it appeared it was played by them, and women's football only came about recently. Also, the fact that football is sport were physical contact can be harsh, people have always associated it to be man-orientated. However, I think that anyone can play football...

I think sports are both more females and males, although some sport requires types of strength that some females may not have. If you think about figure skating you associate to little dresses and to women doing it. But the amount of men now trying figure skating is rising a lot. And rugby is a sport played mainly by men but women are playing and creating futball teams. I think nowadays sport, like everything, is becoming more unisex.

Very nice post ms m. I reckon football is a great sport for children and adults. Unfortunately in Portugal we have serious problems with sports frauds and so on. That is my honest opinion damages the sport, deeply. Sadly the problems keep on appearing and a definitive solution to this problem is yet to come. Once again thank you MS. Melvin for this lovely and rather informative comment.

I don't agree with you different. In fact, Maria is very right in what she is saying. What do you think is more frequent to see? A man doing ballet or playing rugby?

Althought most of the sport can be practised by everyone some sports are more suitable for men than for women because they might be to rough and though for women. However this does not mean they can't practise them just that they might get injured easely. There are also some sports which are a bit femenin but men can practise them too they just might no find it as appeling as some other sports.

In my opinion, nowadays people don't look at sports just for girls or just for boys. Of course some sports require some characteristic in your personality but these characteristics can belong to a male or a female. Of course this is very nice but there are always preferences and abilities for one gender than other. for example: I hate football but certainly there are girls that like it and should be able to play it if they like it as there are certainly boys that don't like football and should't be forced to play if they don't want to.

In my opinion football can be really sexist. Just take our school's example. The Soccer pro Arsenal team just accepts boys. Why not girls? Some of the girls are much better than some boys. Moreover, some sports can be considered girly. Like dance and artist gymnastics. Well that's not true. We can say that the major part is, in fact, girls. However, with nowadays development boys are practising more and more those sports. In addition, we can't consider boys who dance or who practises any sport considered "girly" as an homossexual. It's just prejudice.

sports are a very important issue, it is good for your health and they are very popular among people. there is a big variety of sports, some are more practised by men others by women. this isn't necessary sexist, because there are some sports that require more strengh and are more suited to men. but one the other hand there are olther sports that rae more associated with women.

I dont't think football is a sexist sport. Not at all. There are several female league all around the world, with a spceial influence in Scandinavia. However, men play better than women. Male footbal is more interesting that watching a bunch of girls trying to hit a ball.
therefore I have a message to the girls who want to play a men sport: GO to the WNBA

Football is the most played sport in the world and played by men. Most men have a better physic condition then woman so that might be a possibility and also you really need to like it.Football is most suitable for men beacause it might be to rough and though for women.

I think sports can be practised by females and males, although some sport requires more strength, ability or speed that some females may not have. Rugby is a sport played mainly by men but women are starting to paly to and footbal they are already creating big championships for womens.

I think that football is a sport that both boys and girls can play, because, actually, I play it. And it is something that I just love!
I confess that when someone says the word football almost everyone associates with boys, but nowadays the feminine football is more known and everyday there are girls who join a girl's team.

In my opinion sports are very important, so everyone has the right to practise them. Some sports like football or rugby are more practiced by men than women, but that doens't necesserily mean that women can't play. Although some sports require types of strength that some females may not have. People should practice the sports they want to and not be forced or forbidden.

I dont't think football is a sexist sport at all... There are several female league all around the world, but the fact is that men play better than women. No one cares about female leages... Not even women! On the other hand there are other sports that are more suited for women. It's just the way it is!

I think that, unfortunately, there are many sexist sports, such as football, gymnastics, rugby. Some are more apropriated for women and others for men. This is because the majority of women have characterĂstics, like agility, that are more appropriate for some sports, as men have more strength that is more useful for other sports. However, nowadays this is changing, for better.

I dont think football is a sexist sport. There a lot o female leagues around the world. But I have to admit boys are better than girls in football. Girls don't have that excitement about football that boys have

Sports is an issue that is spoken all around the world every single day! So...In my opinion nowadays sports are not directed to a particular gender. Males and females play sports that in the past were only thought to be for females or males.
I have female friends that play rugby or football and they really play it really well. I also have male friends that do gymnastics or other kind of sport that was thought to be for women. The world has developed and both males and females are able to play any kind of sport. Popularity is another issue! Of course that male football is much more popular than girls football but that doesn't mean that girls don't know how to play football...they just play it in a different way.
:p KEEP PRACTISING YOUR SPORT WHATEVER IT IS...
peace & love

I think all sports can be played both by boys and girls.
Normally you see boys playing football and girls dancing but thats hte way people made it. If you are a girl that likes to play football I think you should't have shame to play what you want; If you are a boy that likes to dance, go for it, I would say. There is no problem with do the sport that you like! Sports are trends. People expect you to play something that is used by boys, but if you like you can play what you want.

I will continue next week!
